MIL: Malfunction Indicator Light
« Reply #-1 on: November 21, 2012, 07:25:59 PM »

The Malfunction Indicator Light on my 2 Door 2012 Wrangler Rubicon (16,8000 miles) came on. It is a steady light and not flashing which, according to the User Guide isn't serious. It recommends that you have the vehicle serviced if it stays on for a few driving cycles.

On some vehicles, there is a way to get the "error code" via flashing dash lights or some other method. Is there a way to do this with my model?

If not, I'd be interested in purchasing the computer which would allow me to get the code and identify the problem. Can someone guide me in the right direction in terms of what to buy?

Thank you in advance.

UPDATE: I was able to find out how to read the code.

P2099.

Can someone tell me what that means?

You should be under warranty.  Just call the dealer and talk to a service Guy and he should be able to tell you what it is

Yes, I'm sure it is under warranty.

P2099 - "Downstream Fuel Trim System 2 Rich"

Not sure what this means.

Well I think they haven't been putting ethenol in the gas so maybe it has something to do with it and check all your connections to see if some plug didn't come loose somewhere or maybe a bad sensor

*** UPDATE *** 11/25/12

I took the vehicle into the dealership on Friday morning and by that afternoon, had it back.

The vehicle "tested fine" and there were no issues. They cleared the code and instructed me to bring it back if the problem happens again (duh).

What they DID tell me was that there was a firmware update for the computer and that the update was related to "false trues". As a
programmer, I understand what that means and it seems plausable. It's over 100 miles later and the light still has not come back on.

Hope this was it. I told service I wasn't looking to have this become a thing where I'm running back and forth to the dealership for the next month.

*** UPDATE 11/29/12 ***

Today marks 6 days and 350 miles since the P2099 error. While the MIL hasn't returned, there is something else...

Ever since I got it back from the dealer, I've been getting a whiff of burning motor oil. I thought that it may have been some oil that dripped on the motor when they did an oil change as part of the 15k service. But this morning, I noticed I was still smelling it and looked under the hood to find a puddle of oil on the motor. The engine compartment was wet and there was no measurable oil in the motor. I tried to keep my cool, but when I called the dealership, I was blunt.

So I have a loaner and their assurances that they would find out what was wrong and why it happened.

Anyone have any ideas? I'd like some feedback so that I have some idea if what they tell me is true or BS when I go back.
